Big bluestem is a tall, warm-season native grass reaching 5-7 feet tall. Preference is for full sun and average to dry soils. This grass is a major component of tall-grass prairie and valuable as a soil stabilizing plant with its deep and substantial root system. The Blackhawks cultivar has deeper purple foliage than typical and only gets darker as the summer wears into autumn. Zone 4-9.
