This woodland tree/shub grows into a considerable thicket with large tropical-looking leaves and is North Americas largest “Berry” (technically it is a berry). Preference is for part to full shade in rich, deep, moist soil. While the plants do not have separate males and females, it is best to plant several individuals for good fruit set. Flowers are reddish-brown and appear in May. The fruits ripen over a long period and then drop in September to October. Only fully ripe fruits are any good. Are they tasty? Lets just say that opinions vary from an obsessive YES to a firm UGH NO. People either love or hate them. Plants are tap-rooted and fairly slow growing with fruit set usually not occurring for several years after planting. Trees grow up to 30 feet tall and spread indefinitely. Zone 5-9. VA ecotype.
