Eastern redbud is a small tree growing to 20-30 feet tall with broad spreading branches and heart shaped leaves. Pink pea-like flowers appear in April attracting bees and other pollinators. Flowers even sometimes occur on the trunk of the tree. Preference is for full sun though some shade is tolerated. Soils should be well-drained. In the wild the tree frequents poor soils that are often rocky or sandy. Beautiful mixed in a tall hedge with dogwood and silverbell. Zone 4-8. VA ecotype.
