The american Hazelnut is a large shrub up to 10-15 feet tall that slowly suckers to form a thicket. Preference is for lowland woods edges and clearings. Flowering occurs very early (February-March) with separate male and female flowers on the same shrub. Female flowers produce a large cluster of smooth husks containing an acorn-like nut that is very good to eat or to leave for wildlife. Leaves are alder-like and have a rich orange fall color. Full sun to part shade in good deep soil is best. Zone 4-9. WV ecotype.
