This perennial sunflower grows in dry gravelly woodlands, clearings and edges throughout the central Appalachian Mountains. Adapts readily to dry semi-shady gardens. It typically grows between 4 and 6 feet tall and spreads slowly through rhizomatous roots. Stems are typically ebony colored and the leaves are smooth, thick and plastic-like. Bright yellow "Sunflowers" 1-2" across appear from August through September. Zone 6-8. WV. ecotype.
