Moonseed is a rhizomatous, woody vine of moist woodland edges, thickets and flood-plains. Vines can grow up to 20 feet high and have large, maple-shaped leaves. makes a nice screen for a porch or arbor. Flowers are white and either male or female on separate plants. Flowers appear in May-June and are fairly attractive. Female flowers produce purple, grape-like, inedible fruits. Loved by many birds. Vines can be somewhat aggressive but not as bad as grape or Virginia creeper. Good for naturalizing or for soil stabilization on stream-banks. Zone 5-8. PA ecotype.
