Shinyleaf spiraea aka birchleaf spiraea is a small shub of dry woodlands and barrens. It has a fairly narrow range in the Appalachian Mountains from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. Can be easily confused with two Japanese species: Spiraea betulifolia and Spiraea japonica. This species grows 1-3 feet tall and has flat clusters of white to pinkish flowers from May to September (unusually long for a shrub). Full to part sun and dry well drained soils are preferred. Zone 4-8. VA ecotype. // Seed packet, about 50-100 seeds. Germination requirements: 60 days cold, moist stratification.
