Sun to light shade; Average to dry stony or sandy soil; Lovely small shrub that grows on dry flinty soils but is tolerant of growing in better soils in a dry garden. Attracts lots of small insects to its little white flowers which in turn attract hummingbirds that catch those insects to feed its chicks. The plant grows very fast even if cut completely to the ground and will still bloom. Leaves were supposedly used as a tea substitute especially during the American revolution when British tea was unavailable. Grows 2-3' tall; Blooms June-July; Zone 4-8; WV-VA mixed ecotypes. Seed packet, about 30 seeds. Germination requirements: 60 days cold, moist stratification. Scarification with sandpaper will improve germination.
