Silphium terebinthinaceum var. lucy-brauniae (Lucy Braun's Rosinweed)

Silphium terebinthinaceum var. lucy-brauniae (Lucy Braun's Rosinweed)

$10.50

Fairly rare and virtually unknown in cultivation. It is similar to the typical prairie dock (Silphium terebinthinaceum) except that it is shorter with flower stalks between 3 and 5 feet tall (rather than 5-8 in the typical species). The surface of the leaves are also smooth rather than sand-papery. It also is slightly stoloniferous and not as strongly taprooted. The plant comes from remnant prairies in Southern Ohio and Northern Kentucky that may predate glaciation when heavy browsing by large mammals made being smaller and advantage. Full to part sun and average to dry, lean soils. Try something that no-one has ever heard of. Zone 5-7? Ohio ecotype. (Thanks to Burlton Griffith for the photo)
