This species hails from sandy, coastal wetlands and pine-barrens. It is a tall, rhizomatous plant reaching up to 6 feet and spreading somewhat to form a loose colony. It has long, spike-like flower clusters late in the summer and autumn (August-October). Think of it as the coastal-plain equivalent of showy goldenrod (S. speciosa). It is one of the most important nectar sources for migrating monarch butterflies! Zone 5-9. VA ecotype.
