American barberry is a rather uncommon low arching and running shrub that is typically found in dry rocky woodlands and outcrops (typically limestone). Leaves are serrated and stems are armed with triple spiked thorns at the base of each leaf. Flowers are yellow and in clusters April-May. Red fruits occur in fall and the foliage typically turns an orange or purple. Preference is for full to part sun and dry well drained soil. Plant is stoloniferous and will form a low thicket. Zone 4-6. WV. ecotype.
