This is an American form of the common hop which was discovered in an Ohio prairie remnant. It is a herbaceous vine lightly armed with small prickles on the stem. Leaves are lobed. Plants come in separate male and female individuals. These plants have not been sexed as they are seed grown rather than from cuttings. Vines grow extensively easily covering trellises and arbors. Provide a sturdy structure for them. Greenish flowers appear July-August and are followed by the “hops” seed structure used in beer brewing. Zone 3-8. OH ecotype.
