Spicebush is an early blooming cheerful harbinger of Spring. This large shrub loves rich, moist woodlands. It’s yellow flowers appear in March-April and are either male or female on separate shrubs. The foliage is aromatic and not favored by deer and can make a refreshing tea. Female shrubs have bright red berries in the fall with a nice yellow fall foliage color. This plant is also the host of the Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly. Grows 6-10 feet tall and about as wide. Non-suckering. Zone 4-9. VA ecotype.
