Trumpet honeysuckle is a native woody vine growing 6-15 feet tall or so. It’s bright red flowers attract hordes of hummingbirds. Blooms long, from April to September. Preference is for part shade and rich garden soil. In the wild it prefers thickets and woods-edges or stream edges and low flood-plains. The ‘Major Wheeler’ cultivar was discovered wild in a thicket on Cape Hatteras and is notable for its dark red flowers, long bloom time and disease resistance. Zone 4-9. NC ecotype
