Umbrella magnolia is a small tree reaching 20-30 feet tall and often multi-trunked. It grows in rich deep soils that are neither especially wet nor dry. Preference is for full sun to part shade though it can actually tolerate nearly full shade. The foliage is quite large and distinctive. Flowering occurs May-June with large musky-sweet white flowers. Unique and rather tropical looking! Zone 5-8. VA ecotype
