Matelea caroliniensis (Carolina Milkvine)
Carolina milk vine is very similar to climbing milkweed (M. obliqua) but with some subtle floristic differences and a range that is more Piedmont and Coastal. Light sun to part shade; Moist to dry, well-drained soil; Star-shaped maroon flowers with broad, non-twisted petals (unlike those of M. obliqua). Medium sized herbaceous vine with pale green, heart-shaped leaves reaching 5-8 feet or more depending on what it can climb into. Preferred habitat is dry woodland edges in thickets where it can scramble among the low twiggy growth.; Blooms June-July; zones 5-8. Unknown ecotype (Thanks to Jeff Ausmus for Sharing seeds)
