Smoke Hole Bergamot is a short, early-blooming form of fistulosa that may become it’s own species. This rare plant grows on limestone rich, gravely barrens on the West Virginia-Virginia border especially around Seneca Rocks and the town of Smoke Hole West Virginia. Flowers appear in June a full month ahead of other bee-balm species. Flowers range from white to pink. The plant is typically between 6 and 10 inches tall with glossy leaves that have an intense menthol flavor if tasted. Preference is for full to part sun and extremely well drained soil. Zone 4-8? WV ecotype.
