Oenothera tetragona is variable in form depending on ecotype. Generally it closely resembles Oenothera fruticosa. Our local form tends to prefer rich woodlands, has hairy stems, broader leaves and grows taller. Young spring growth also has speckled or even solidly purple coloration. Soils are typically dry and well-drained but organically rich. Preference is for full to part sun. Flowers appear in June-July on 2-3 foot tall stems. Zone 3-8. VA ecotype.
