Roseshell Azalea is a very early blooming (April-May) and range from pale pink to dark rose. The flowers are heavily scented with a clove-like fragrance. Can be very hard to distinguish from Rhododendron periclymenoides. Grows 6-8 feet tall. Preference is for part to full shade and is often found in dark cove-like forests of very humusy, moist, but well-drained soil. Can tolerate higher PH than other Azaleas. Zone 3-8. VA ecotype.
