The Virginia rose, like Carolina rose, is a variably sized plant from population to population. It is typically from 3 to 6 feet tall with large pink flowers midsummer (June-Jul). The ecotype I have is from Long-Island and seems to trend short (2-4 feet tall). Seeds shared by Anthony Marinello of Dropseed Native Landscapes (NY). Virginia rose is considerably less thorny than other roses and is sometimes even thornless. Preference is for full sun to part shade and moist to dry well-drained soil. It will sucker to form a large thicket. It also has fairly large rose-hips that are strongly favored by migratory birds. Weirdly, this plant is almost entirely absent from Virginia as all botanical records were found to be natural carolina x virginica hybrids. Zone 4-7. NY ecotype.
