This is a low, herbaceous, clematis that is endemic to the shale-barrens of West Virginia and Virginia. Attractive, non-vining clumps of grey-green leaves appear early in the spring and are quickly topped with pale white to lavender, downy, bell-like flowers From April to May. Filamentous seed clusters then form that are also attractive in their own way. This plant grows on loose, gravelly ledges in the wild and so must be given extreme drainage and rather low-nutrient soils. Part shade is also preferred. Zone 5-7. WV, VA ecotypes. // Seed packet, about 25 seeds. Germination requirements: Double dormancy. 60 days of cold moist stratification followed by 90 days 70-80 degrees followed again by 60 days cold moist stratification.
