Franklin Tree is an Extinct tree native to the Alatamaha River Valley in Georgia. Surviving only in cultivation from a chance seed collection made in 1777 by William Bartram. This is a small shrubby tree growing to 20 feet tall. white camellia-like flowers bloom late-summer to late Autumn (August-November). Leaves turn a brilliant red in the Autumn. Preference is for full sun to part shade. Roots are sensitive to rot. Soil preference is an organic,, well-drained, acidic loam. Will not tolerate clay or wet soils or lime-rich soils. Zone 5-8. GA ecotype (Of course) // 30 seeds per packet. // Germination requirements: Difficult. Cold moist stratification 30-60 days. Be patient, seeds may require two or more years to germinate.
