Trillium pusillum var. virginianum (Virginia Dwarf Wakerobin)
The Virginia Dwarf Trillium is a very rare trillium growing in low acidic woodlands throughout the coastal plain and piedmont areas of Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. While not always recognized as separate from the more widespread Trillium pusillum var. pusillum; it never-the-less has distinct features different from the “type” plant. It is a small trillium growing 4-6 inches tall with small, sessile or nearly sessile flowers blooming in March-April. (Var. pusillum have bigger flowers that are on stalks (rather than sessile) and has a more southern and western distribution.) Preference is for part to full shade and moist, acidic, low woodlands. Vary rare! Zone 5-9, / VA. ecotype.
