Vaccinium pallidum 'Storm Lake' (Hillside Blueberry)
Vaccinium pallidum 'Storm Lake' (Hillside Blueberry)
Hillside Blueberry is very similar to lowbush blueberry (V. angustifolium) but is much shorter. It is a small spreading shrub between 1 and 2 feet tall that grows in average to dry upland woods and barrens. It requires an acidic and well drained soil to thrive as well as part sun though it can be grown in full sun if adequate soil preparation is made. White bell-shaped flowers appear in early spring (April - May) and are followed by small sweet blueberries. Has wonderful red fall coloration as well. The ‘storm lake’ selection comes from the Dolly Sodds area of West Virginia and is very short: between 6 and 10 inches tall. Zone 3-6. WV ecotype.
