This small, rhizomatous sedge grows in cold, northern fens and calcareous wetlands in New England and the upper mid-west. It grows 4 to 16 inches tall and prefers full to part sun and wet, rocky or sandy soils. Its most interesting attribute are the seeds that turn yellow-orange in late spring and are exceptionally attractive. Zone 3-8. unknown ecotype
