Developed from a wild, purple-leafed Cardinal flower population in West Virginia by plantsman Peter Heus of Enchanters Garden. This form has exceptionally dark foliage. Grows in wet mucky soils, flood-plains, creek edges and wet-meadows. Plants grow from 2-4 feet tall and have dark red flowers in mid-summer July-August. Flowers are much loved by hummingbirds, butterflies, and sphinx moths. Zone 3-9. WV ecotype.
