Yes, we have a cold-hardy native cactus. The eastern prickly pear grows on dry sandy outcrops, roadsides, cliffs, dunes and barrens. It is happy in a dry rock garden with plenty of sun. Yellow flowers appear from June to July on top of fleshy pads which have numerous tiny prickles. The flowers are followed by purple fruits which are edible and tasty. Plants grow 10-14" tall but spread by the rooting of pads which come into contact with the ground. Can form an extensive groundcover. Zone 4-9. WV ecotype.
